Infection Q & A

What is an infection?

An infection is a condition that develops when a specific pathogen enters a child’s body and multiplies. Most infections are caused by viruses, but children can also contract infections caused by bacteria, parasites or a fungus. Infections can affect almost any part of the body. Some of the most common infections experienced by children include ear infections, urinary tract infections, sinus infections, and lung infections. Wounds in the skin can also become infected.

How do children get infections?

Children develop infections because they come into contact with a pathogen that their immune system isn’t able to destroy. They may encounter the pathogens that cause infections by interacting with other infected people or touching contaminated surfaces. In some cases, infections may even occur because of an overgrowth of bacteria normally present on the skin or in the body.

What are the symptoms of an infection?

The specific symptoms of an infection depend on the location of the infection and the pathogen causing it. However, some of the most common symptoms of infection include:

  • Pain, swelling, and redness in the infected area
  • A general feeling of unwellness
  • Fever
  • A high white blood cell count

Severe infections can cause much more serious symptoms and may even require hospitalization.

How are infections diagnosed?

Dangond Pediatrics can diagnose some infections with a physical examination of the patient and a description of their symptoms. For example, if the infection is located in the ear, our doctors can look inside the ear to confirm the diagnosis. Other infections may require additional testing, such as blood work, imaging tests, or urinalysis.

How does Dangond Pediatrics treat infections?

If an infection is caused by bacteria, our doctors can usually resolve the infection by prescribing an antibiotic. Infections caused by other organisms require different types of treatment. When infections are particularly severe, the patient may require injections, intravenous medications, or even surgery. To avoid more intensive treatment, parents should seek treatment for their children as soon as possible.

Most patients improve quickly after beginning treatment. Patients who fail to improve should make another appointment with Dr. Dangond.
